Science on MONDAY

11/9/2015

Dear Parents,

Today Emily brought in a cool thing that she calls ‘Something Beautiful’. The children have decided for language experience on Monday that they would like to make these. We are going to ‘lava lamps’ and learn about the science for ‘how these work’. The children need to bring a clear bottle or jar that can be closed securely with a lid (can be plastic or glass).

Kind Regards,

Cat

10.9.2015

Dear Parents,

As you are aware our St John Bosco School production ‘Over the Rainbow’ is approaching quickly! If you (or Nanna) are a sewer and have some spare time can you please pop in and see me - we are lucky we only have a couple of sparkly tops that need making.

The children will come to the evening performances (Thursday and Friday) wearing their own clothes/mufti and change into their costumes at the venue. They will change back into their own clothing before returning home. For the Matinee performance on the Wednesday children will come to school in their uniform as usual.

What we need:

BOYS AND GIRLS
Bring a pair of black 3/4 or knee length or bike shorts. Please name them and place in a NAMED sturdy plastic or other bag (preferably a sturdy bag could be a swimming bag etc…)
If you don’t have these let me know and I will sort something out for you.

GIRLS:
Need to come with hair in high piggy tails (if possible)
Black singlet

If you are available on one of the evenings to help me with the following let me know…
Get the children dressed and undressed. I usually try and get them dressed before the end of the production so that they can get home to bed as soon as possible :)
Do make up/ hair (makeup usually consists of some simple face paint)

Thanks for your support,

Cycle skills session 1

Bread making

Today we put our knowledge about yeast to the test. We baked bread. We noticed the changes in the bread - that it rose when we left it in the sun.

We also talked about the yeast being asleep - when warm water is added this wakes the yeast up!

We enjoyed baking bread and thinking like scientists!

What did you notice? What did it smell like? Taste like ? Look like? Feel like?

Taranaki rugby team visit

Some of the wonderful Taranaki rugby players came to visit us a few weeks ago. Because it was St. John Bosco's 200th birthday we thought we would get them to help us celebrate.

Thinking like s scientist

Room 2 have been learning about thinking like a scientist...

Yesterday were learning to use I wonder and I notice statements to notice a change in substance. We were also learning to use our senses to help us look closely and think like a scientist.

Experiment one:

We put warm water and yeast in all of the test tubes. Then we added vinegar in the first test tube, baking soda in the middle test tube and sugar in the last tube. We then observed any changes. We noticed that the tube with the sugar started to make the yeast go up. It was getting warm and getting more energy. The yeast was eating the sugar! It produced carbon dioxide!

We left the tubes over morning tea! When we came back the test tube with sugar in had exploded over the top of the test tube!!!

Experiment two - the sugar and yeast mixture produced a gas which made the balloon blow up!

Room 2 are enjoying learning about science! It is important at this age to encourage curiosity that's why we have a big focus on asking I wonder questions. At the moment It's all about exploring, having fun and noticing scientific change. We also used our senses to notice what things smelt like, felt like, looked like and sounded like.

Week 7 home learning.

We are learning about the sounds y, u and blend st

We are finishing up our learning about skip counti. Next week we move onto measurement.

Let's go cycle skills - NEXT WEEK!!!
Have you returned your let's go permission form? I can get you another one if y have misplaced the original.
